Renters Beware of Craigslist Scams

If you're interested in visiting or relocating to the US Virgin Islands, then it's likely that you have surfed looking for real estate to rent or buy. There's no fault in that as Craigslist is a great resource when it comes to classified ads. The problems begin when as a searcher you are unaware of the potential dangers of craigslist. We've compiled a list of specific warning signs to look out for.

  • Craigslist Relay Contact - If there is no contact information besides craigslist relay, be skeptical.
  • Great Price - If the price looks too good to be true, it probably is. 
  • Off Island - Listing individual is located internationally.
  • Fees - Listing individual requests up-front fee.
  • Repeating Price Points - If you see back to back ads with the same price point, it's likely a scam
  • No Photos - Not always a give away but serious sellers will typically include a photo or two.
  • Ridiculous Details - You'd be hard-pressed to find a home in the VI that has a heated garage.
  • Misplaced Lingo - Such as "Business District", "Saint" vs. St., "Apartment" vs. Condo. 

These are some common things to look out for. Ads that aren't genuine are an attempt to gain your personal information for nefarious purposes.

Specifically on the Virgin Islands Craigslist are a series of 6-10 rental ads that are posted recurrently offering a rental on any of the three islands at a price between $700-$800. These ads are a scam.

If you are not on island, the safest bet for finding real estate or a rental is to contact an on island agency. If you are on island, always physically check out the property listed before making any form of payment.

Power Outage Dec. 29 2015

STT/STJ: 12/29/15 (7:50am) – Surge at Randolph Harley Power Plant resulted in loss of generating units and service to all feeders. Plant personnel currently working to stabilize generation capacity. Feeder restoration to begin in approximately 1 hour. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate the patience of our customers. (Source)

Due to this outage, the phones at Holiday Homes are down. Our office at the Marketplace has power and internet access, so if you’re on island today, come stop by and speak with an agent about what’s currently on market!

EDIT:As of 11:50pm local time, the power is back on across both St. Thomas and St. John.
