The Baths in Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands (BVI)

The British Virgin Islands are a well known paradise renowned for its crystal-clear waters, lush greenery, and warm, welcoming community. Yet, among its many natural treasures, there’s one place that leaves us in awe every time we visit it: The Baths of Virgin Gorda. The Baths are the perfect representation of nature, beauty, and tranquility. It is a place where you can come to escape civilization and relax on the sandy beach, enjoy the incredible views, or even climb some boulders.

Legend has it that these boulders were formed from volcanic activity millions of years ago and have been sculpted over time by the relentless forces of wind and water. The name, however, was given to the island by Christopher Columbus in 1493, during his second journey to the Americas. Apparently, the island’s silhouette resembles that of a voluptuous woman, which inspired its name: Virgin Gorda, literally meaning “The Fat Virgin”.

The entrance to the Baths is located within the Virgin Gorda National Park, and a small fee is required to enter. The park is well-maintained, with facilities including restrooms, picnic areas, and a small restaurant where you can grab a refreshing drink or a bite to eat. To make the most of your visit, we recommend arriving early in the morning to avoid the crowds, bring plenty of water, and don’t forget your camera and snorkel gear.

The most famous part of The Baths is the challenging trail that winds through the boulders, leading to Devil’s Bay. The walk to Devil’s Bay Beach takes about 7-10 minutes, depending on how agile you are. There are some obstacles like slippery rocks and some climbing to do, so we also recommend wearing proper footwear for the occasion. You should take your time and be careful with your step and you’ll be able to get to Devil’s Bay without any issues.

Once you get to the shore, the view will make you forget about everything and you’ll be able to relax to the sound of the soothing waves. If you still feel like climbing, you can jump on a big boulder and watch the beach from above! If you are really lucky, you may spot a sea turtle gliding gracefully by the warm waters around the boulders.

The Baths are a testament to the awe-inspiring power of nature and a beloved part of our island’s heritage. Whether you’re seeking adventure, tranquility, or simply a moment of reflection, The Baths offer a unique and unforgettable experience. We hope that when you visit, you will fall in love with this magical place just as we have and carry its beauty and serenity with you long after you leave.
